Why did I forsake Thee, O, my First Love?
Thou didst hold me to thee as a warm, gentle dove.
Protectively with Thy mighty right arm,
Thou didst keep me from all the world’s harm.
Words of compassion, mercy and love were your lure,
And, somehow in Your love I knew I was secure.
Thou didst speak sweetly words of truth and wisdom,
Offering a portion of Thy grand and glorious kingdom!
Even so, I allowed my eyes to become blind,
Now, through sin my soul is confined.
With unclean hands I have touched this world’s treasures,
Leaving You, my Frist Love, for earthly pleasures!
Now only confusion and darkness abound,
So, I cry out to Thee, Love, to drown out the sound.
And, though my heart lies saying, “All is lost!” “Thou hast failed the test!”
Your sweet words, my Only Love, still beckon, “Come, I wll give thee rest!”
